The YKI exam, explained simply

YKI is Finland’s National Certificate of Language Proficiency for adults. It tests reading, listening, writing, and speaking separately. Finnish or Swedish YKI results are one way to demonstrate the language skills required for Finnish citizenship.
What is the YKI exam?
The YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto, the National Certificate of Language Proficiency) is Finland’s official language test for adults. It is organised by the University of Jyväskylä on behalf of the Finnish National Agency for Education, and it certifies how well you understand and use Finnish in real situations.
The Finnish intermediate test assesses B1–B2 skills. For citizenship, you need an accepted combination of subtest results; an overall average is not how the requirement is assessed. See the combinations below and check Migri’s official guidance for your application.
The three YKI levels
Perustaso (Basic)
CEFR A1–A2Everyday basics: short messages and simple conversations.
Keskitaso (Intermediate)
CEFR B1–B2Assesses B1–B2 skills. Accepted subtest results can demonstrate the language skills required for citizenship.
Ylin taso (Advanced)
CEFR C1–C2Assesses advanced language skills at C1–C2.
The four sections
Each subtest receives its own result. In the intermediate test, the results are below 3, 3, or 4. Grade 3 corresponds to B1 and grade 4 to B2. There is no single average score for citizenship purposes.
Which YKI results count for citizenship?
Migri accepts the following intermediate-level combinations, with a grade of 3 or 4 in each of the two subtests:
- Speaking and writing
- Listening comprehension and writing
- Reading comprehension and speaking
Two certificates may together form an accepted combination. These results address the language requirement; they do not establish eligibility for citizenship on their own. Read Migri’s YKI guidance.
How to prepare
A practical starting point is to practise the kinds of tasks the exam uses, a little every day, and to get feedback on your writing and speaking, the two sections learners most often underestimate. Build the high-frequency vocabulary that appears across the test, train your ear with exam-style audio, and rehearse spoken answers out loud until they feel automatic.
